The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is used by some PA schools to evaluate applicants along with the GPA, clinical experience, shadowing, and community service. PA school requirements vary from school to school. If you’re wondering whether you need to take the GRE for PA school, you’re not alone. For applicants who dread standardized tests, the good news is that the GRE is NOT required by most PA schools.
How Many PA Programs Require the GRE?
Based on 2025 PA school admissions data, 86 (27%) of 313 PA programs require the GRE. This is down compared to the last few years, when a larger percentage of schools required the GRE. The vast majority of PA schools do not require any standardized test. A handful of schools require the Physician Assistant College Admissions Test (PA-CAT).
What is the Average GRE Score for PA School Admissions?
- The average composite GRE for admission to PA school is 305.4 in 2025, based on data published on different PA schools’ websites.
- The averages vary for different programs and can range from 301 to 315 depending on the school.
- In our experience, competitive GRE scores for PA school are in the low 150s or above on Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning.
- For some schools, a higher GRE score may be considered competitive.
- People with lower GRE scores may also get accepted to PA school if other parts of their application are strong. For some programs, the PA school GRE scores range from the low 290s to the low 330s for accepted students.
What is the Minimum GRE Score for PA School Admissions?
While there is no universal minimum GRE score for PA school, many programs have a minimum requirement of 300. For others, the minimum is lower and some schools have no minimum GRE requirement. We have reported the minimum GRE scores for schools that report this information in the section below.
Should I Take the GRE for PA School If It’s Not Required?
Typically, the GRE score does not matter for PA schools that don’t require the test. Of the 227 PA schools that don’t require the GRE, only 11 of them report on their website that they recommend or consider the test in admission decisions. For the remaining PA schools, your score is unlikely to make a difference.
How Long Do PA Programs Accept GRE Scores?
The GRE validity for PA school varies from school to school, but for many PA schools, GRE scores are valid for 5 years. Some schools will accept GRE scores that are valid for 10 years, while others have a 3-year cutoff. For schools that report this information, we have listed this information below.
How to Report GRE Scores on CASPA
You can self-report your GRE scores within the CASPA application in the Standardized Tests Section under Academic History. Many schools require that you send official GRE score reports to them directly.
If you have taken the GRE more than once, there is no specific CASPA GRE reporting policy on which score you should report. However, PA schools have varying requirements.
