A Human-Centered and Holistic Approach to Dental School Admissions: High Point University’s Goal to Disrupt Dental Education and How to Prepare for It.

By Michael Wolcott PharmD, PhD, Dean for Education, Workman School of Dental Medicine, High Point University What comes to mind when you think about the frustrations of the dental school admissions process? When we spoke with dentists about their previous experiences applying to dental school, we consistently heard the typical admissions process was complicated, expensive, and lacking transparency. Moreover, it often forgot about the person at the center of the experience. The High Point University (HPU) Workman School of Dental Medicine (WSDM) is working to disrupt dental education, starting with its novel admissions process. Designing a Novel Dental School Admissions Process: We used feedback from prior dental school applicants as a launch point to design a dental school admissions process that addresses these concerns. We have created an application that has the fewest number of components to make it as easy as possible to navigate. We have reduced the cost of applying to dental school by not using a centralized application process and eliminating the supplemental application fee that is typically charged by programs. Providing and Receiving Feedback from Applicants: We provide as much information as possible to our candidates about our expectations and how they could best prepare for successful admission to our dental school. Most importantly, we think deeply about the experience of the candidate through the whole admissions process. We continue to collect feedback from our applicants for ways to improve their experience—applying to dental school is already stressful enough; we do not want to contribute to the stress inadvertently. Using Personas to Create a New Model: One critical exercise we employed in designing our admissions...

One crucial requirement for admission to PA school is accruing a minimum number of hours of patient care experience (PCE). To be competitive, pre-PA students need at least 500 PCE hours and up to 2,000 hours depending on the program. One way that pre-PA students can get the PCE hours they need is by working as a certified phlebotomist. PA schools look favorably on applicants who have served as a phlebotomist and many schools explicitly list phlebotomy as an example of a solid type of PCE. Depending on the phlebotomy program and where you live, the process for completing training and getting certified as a phlebotomist can take less than a month and allow you to work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, physician offices, medical labs, blood drives, or as mobile phlebotomists. How to Become a Phlebotomist Becoming a phlebotomist requires finding accredited phlebotomy class providers and enrolling in their phlebotomy program. The following is a link to different phlebotomy courses and you can find one that is near you: https://phlebotomyclassesnearyou.com/ All programs have minimum admission requirements, which can vary. Most programs have a minimum age requirement of 18 years and require immunizations if they offer clinical training hours. Phlebotomy classes can be found through private vocational schools, community colleges, universities, and healthcare facilities. There are three types of programs available: certificate...

Call: 888-839-9997 e-mail: [email protected] 20 Minutes Free Consultation Part IV: Research Experience as a Pre-Dental Student Dental schools prefer applicants with research experience. Research could help you build a stronger application for dental school and it can help you build your skills as a critical thinker. While most pre-dental students do biomedical research, if done properly, research experience in virtually any field is looked upon favorably because the general approach to conducting research is similar across various disciplines. One way to decide which type of research you should conduct is to ask yourself what interests you most. If you enjoy working in the laboratory, basic science research would be a great option. If you prefer interacting with others, you may want to participate in survey-based research where you could conduct interviews with study participants. Dental clinical research may also give you the opportunity to interact with patients who are subjects in a study. Regardless of what setting you choose; make sure you get involved in an experience where you are not just performing mundane technical tasks but you are also involved in high-level thinking and problem-solving.  It may be difficult to take on your own project if you have no previous research experience, but even if you are assisting, find a research project where you could contribute to the study design, the interpretation of data, and the write up of your research. Dental schools will be highly impressed by your...
